Jeru the Damaja - Wrath of the math
Wrath of the Math
1996 Payday/Fontana
This guy never should have dropped off the way he did. This album, along with his debut, has some of the most solid rhyme schematics of the 1990s. A verbally versatile style and the distinctly jazz informed spartan funk of Gang Starr's DJ Premier on the decks make for a lethal musical combo.
Ya Playin Yaself was th track I recall from the days when I actually caught Yo! MTV Raps, but the drunk and staggering funk of Physical Stamina and the sharp snarl behind Scientifical Madness are standouts for me a decade later.
I'll take one track off this album over the entire output of Lil Wayne, Chamillionaire or any of the other half-pint hip-hop wastrels.
